Mandela Day 2024

On Mandela Day, 18 July 2024, the LEAP Institute, in collaboration with the LEAP Science & Maths SOur Mandela Day event was a resounding success, bringing together 38 enthusiastic attendees for a day filled with enriching activities designed to equip our youth with vital skills for their future. The energy and dedication shown by the participants and the supporting organisations made this day truly special. Here’s a detailed look at the impactful sessions and activities that took place.

A Day of Comprehensive Skill Development

The event kicked off with a warm welcome, setting the tone for a day of learning and growth. Our first session focused on hands-on computer training, where participants were introduced to essential digital skills. This training aimed to bridge the digital divide and provide the youth with the technological competencies required in today’s fast-paced world. Participants learned basic to intermediate computer skills, including word processing, spreadsheet management, and effective internet usage. These skills are not only crucial for academic success but also for future employment opportunities.

Next, we moved on to CV revamping workshops. In these sessions, experienced facilitators guided the youth through the process of creating professional and impactful CVs. The participants were taught how to highlight their skills, experiences, and achievements effectively, making them stand out to potential employers. The hands-on approach allowed each attendee to work on their CVs in real-time, receiving personalised feedback and tips for improvement.

Stress Management and Personal Growth

Recognising the importance of mental health and well-being, we dedicated a significant portion of the day to stress management techniques. The youth were introduced to practical methods for managing stress, including mindfulness exercises, breathing techniques, and time management strategies. These sessions aimed to equip them with the tools needed to navigate the pressures of academic life and future professional environments. The interactive nature of the workshops encouraged participants to share their experiences and learn from each other, fostering a supportive community atmosphere.

Sustainable Living through Vertical Gardening

A highlight of the day was the session on sustainable living, where attendees learned about vertical gardening. This innovative approach to gardening is particularly relevant for urban areas with limited space. The youth were taught how to create and maintain vertical gardens, emphasising the benefits of sustainable agriculture and self-sufficiency. The hands-on activity not only provided practical gardening skills but also highlighted the importance of environmental stewardship. Participants left with a newfound appreciation for sustainability and a desire to implement these practices in their own communities.
