On the 30th and 31st of January 2024, the LEAP Institute, in collaboration with Ninnette Eliasov from Elamanzi, organised a transformative workshop in Mbekweni, Paarl. This workshop aimed to introduce Asset-Based Community Development (ABCD) principles to the local community, emphasising empowerment and collaboration rather than focusing solely on needs.
ABCD is a community-centred approach that focuses on identifying and leveraging existing strengths and assets within a community to promote sustainable development. Unlike traditional approaches that often view communities through a lens of deficits and needs, ABCD recognises the inherent capabilities and resources present in every community.
The workshop in Mbekweni was a vibrant gathering of community members, educators, and stakeholders eager to explore the principles of ABCD. Through interactive sessions and group activities, participants learned how to identify and map assets within their community, including talents, skills, institutions, and relationships.
One of the core principles of ABCD is the belief in the power of collaboration and collective action. During the workshop, participants were encouraged to work together to identify opportunities for collaboration and synergy. By fostering partnerships and networks, communities can amplify their impact and address challenges more effectively.
Throughout the workshop, participants engaged in lively discussions and hands-on activities, exploring ways to mobilise community assets for positive change. From mapping local resources to brainstorming potential projects, the workshop provided practical tools and strategies for community empowerment.
At the heart of ABCD is the idea of community-led development, where residents are empowered to take ownership of their futures. By shifting the focus from external interventions to internal strengths, communities can chart their own path towards sustainable development and resilience.
As the workshop concluded, participants left with a renewed sense of optimism and purpose. Armed with the principles of ABCD, they were eager to apply their newfound knowledge and skills to drive positive change in Mbekweni and beyond. By embracing a strengths-based approach, communities can unlock their full potential and build a brighter future together.
The ABCD workshop in Mbekweni, Paarl, was a testament to the power of community empowerment and collaboration. By harnessing the strengths and assets within their midst, participants gained the confidence and tools needed to lead their own development journey. As we look ahead, let us continue to champion ABCD principles and work together towards a more resilient and thriving community.
