The Living and Learning Labs, in collaboration with Total Energies, recently launched Solar Cell Phone Charger Workshops at Leap Science and Math Schools in Cape Town. This initiative provided an enriching opportunity for grade 8 and 9 students from Leap 1, LEAP 2, and LEAP 7 to delve into the fascinating world of solar technology.
Facilitated by Sunstep (Science and Technology Education Programme), the three-hour workshop immersed students in hands-on learning experiences. Participants gained valuable insights into the workings of circuit boards and the essential components involved, including resistors, capacitors, diodes, and more.
Each student received a printed circuit board along with the 13 components necessary for assembly. Guided by expert instructors, students learned to insert and solder the components onto the circuit board, honing their technical skills and understanding of solar energy applications.
One of the highlights of the workshop was the opportunity for students to test their creations firsthand. Armed with their newly assembled solar cell phone chargers, learners ventured outside to put their devices to the test. This practical exercise not only reinforced their learning but also empowered them to witness the tangible impact of renewable energy solutions.
A particularly rewarding aspect of the workshop was that students were able to keep their solar cell phone chargers. This not only served as a reminder of their participation but also provided them with a practical tool for everyday use, promoting sustainability and environmental consciousness.
